Description A: Stylized figurine of a horse, carved from a single piece of wood, painted white, and fitted with red bridle, blue saddle and gold blanket beneath its head; Mane and tail are represented by bundles of straw-colored plant fibers; Figurine represents Yoro-go, a horse noted for its superior form and beauty that lived during the Bunkyu Era (1861-1863) and was immortalized as a sculpture dedicated at the Miharu Dai-jingu shrine and became a charm for the elderly; B: Black horse similar to above except for its color, the use of horse or human hair to represent the mane and tail, and the fact that it serves as a charm for child-rearing, ensuring healthy children.

Description Two pair of wooden chopsticks (B and D; individual chopsticks are not separated), each inside a folded paper carrying case (A and C) with a leaf print on the outside; Also attached to the front of each carrying case is a small doll with a body made from a toothpick and dressed in an elaborate kimono and obi made from folded paper; The two kimonos are worn in a different manner and the dolls’ hairstyles also differ from one another; Dolls of this type are especially popular around the time of Hina Matsuri, observed on March 3 and sometimes referred to as Girls Day, although its history and traditions are much more complex.

Description Pair of lacquered papier mache Noh theater-style masks depicting a white-faced, smiling woman with plump, rosy cheeks and a second individual with flesh-toned skin, large eyes, and an open mouth (as if whistling), both joined together but opposite each other by a strip of brown paper edged in green ribbon, allowing the two masks to be squeezed together like an accordion, and thus producing a faint whizzing sound though a small hole in the chin of the second mask.

Description Pair of miniature male and female dolls made to resemble kokeshi dolls, except the bodies of these are made from walnut shells whose ends have been cut off so they will stand flat, and the opposite end has been drilled out to accept a very narrow diameter stick that serves as each doll’s neck; The actual head of each doll was formed on a lathe, painted, and then mounted on the end of the “neck”; A: Male doll; Face is painted with narrow black eyes, tiny red mouth, and tuft of black hair at sides of head, and black hair on top of head cut in star-shaped pattern; B: Female doll; Head is similar to A except a black hat with pink circle on front covers most of her hair; Back of each figure bears Japanese writing in white paint.

Description Animated toy in the form of a carousel, in which four paper “dancers” dressed in black and white costumes stand on wooden crossbars, all beneath a round yellow paper roof with red banner around its perimeter; Carousel roof is mounted on bamboo rod which extends down through along piece of split bamboo; Shorter bamboo crossbar is secured in split of larger bamboo piece and string is tied to one end of crossbar, stretched forward and wrapped around carousel’s support rod, and then back to the opposite end of the bamboo crossbar; When either end of the crossbar is moved forward or backward, it causes the carousel to rotate; Possible shrine name is written in Japanese script on piece of wood that locks the split ends of the bamboo piece in place; Date is written on underside of split bamboo piece.

Description Miniature fan which telescopes into itself and when closed, appears to be a cylindrical firecracker on a wooden stick; By pushing on the stick, the fan opens to reveal a second paper cylinder and finally a very small figurine of the Goddess of Mercy in front of a gold foil paper disk that gradually unfurls; Exterior of fan is decorated with three painted images of feathers, and an orange and blue band around the top and bottom; Artist’s signature is printed in black ink on verso.

Description Shadow puppet in the form of a cardboard cutout of a white fox shown, representing the messenger of Inari, the rice god, standing upright and dressed in a kabuki costume of a brown robe, as worn by Ishikawa Danjuro, who died in 1903 but who, during his lifetime, frequently visited the Oji Shrine to pray for the success of his theatrical career; A role in “Shibaraku” was among one of his most famous and the play is among “18 Famous Plays” reserved only for the Danjuro family; In this toy, the fox is shown holding holding a bamboo stick which moves up and down when one of the bamboo sticks on which he is mounted is moved up and down, recreating a motion from the play; On the fox’s kimono is printed an image of concentric squares, representing “3 rice measures,” another reference to Inari.

Description Animated toy consisting of a papier mâché monkey wearing a blue and gold hat of a Sambaso dancer (whose dances appease the gods and bring good luck) and carrying a paper drum and a Shinto gohei (cut-paper offering to the gods) on its back; Monkey is suspended on a tall bamboo pole that is topped with white feathers, the pole, in turn, mounted in a cross-section piece cut from the branch of a cherry tree, and in turn, glued to a rectangular wood base that is painted black; Apparently missing is a large paper banner painted with an iris (the flower emblem for Boys’ Day) that would be attached to the monkey and act like a sail in the wind, causing the monkey to either climb or descend the pole; Parents would traditionally give this type of toy to a newborn boy to protect him against illness and also to symbolize their wish that he climb to a high position in life.

Description Carving of a rat with movable head and tail mounted on metal pins and manipulated by means of a side-mounted bamboo spring in conjunction with string; Rat's body is painted dark brown; When bamboo “spring” is compressed, the rat drops both its tail and head, thereby representing a caricature of lean times, showing rat trying to eat from empty rice bowl; This toy was first made in 1830 as an ironic but humorous comment on the great famine that occurred that year; Its production was resumed again after it appeared on the Chinese New Year’s stamp in 1960.
